The Acorns programme is built around a simple conviction: that the early years deserve the best we can give. Not early academic pressure, but rich experiences, deep play, and the kind of warmth that makes children feel safe enough to grow.

Play — Free & Structured

Play is not filler — it is the primary work of early childhood. At Acorns, we protect time for both free play (children choosing their own activities) and structured play (teacher-led games, activities, and exploration). Both kinds of play are essential, and both happen every single day.

Living Books & Read-Alouds

We read aloud to our children every day — good books, carefully chosen, read with love and expression. Long before children can read themselves, they can fall in love with stories, develop a rich vocabulary, and learn what it feels like to be transported by a book. This is the foundation of lifelong literacy.

Swimming

Swimming is included in the Acorns programme. All children learn to swim — not just as a sport, but as a vital life skill. Swimming also develops body awareness, coordination, breath control, and confidence in the water. In Durban, this is non-negotiable.

Early Mathematics

Mathematics in the early years is concrete and playful — counting, sorting, patterns, measurement, and number concepts through hands-on materials and games. We lay strong foundations for the Singapore Math approach children will encounter in the Primary School.

Languages — Afrikaans & isiZulu

Language acquisition happens naturally in the early years — children's brains are wired for it. We introduce Afrikaans and isiZulu through song, games, greetings, and conversation. No formal grammar at this stage — just joyful, relational exposure to the languages of our context.

Music, Art & Handwork

Singing, movement, rhythm, and music are woven into every day. Art is exploratory and process-focused — we are not producing perfect products, we are developing children who are not afraid to make things. Handwork builds fine motor skills and the deep satisfaction of creating something with your hands.

Nature Time

Regular outdoor time, nature walks, and simple observation of the natural world. Children who grow up paying attention to birds, insects, plants, and seasons develop a capacity for wonder and careful observation that enriches their entire life. We protect this time fiercely.

Bible & Character

Bible stories, prayer, and the values of kindness, honesty, and care for others are woven naturally into our daily life. We introduce children to the person of Jesus in an age-appropriate, warm, and unhurried way. Character formation happens in the small moments, every day.
