How It Began

A Small School with a
Big Conviction.

Ambleside School of Durban was founded on a simple but radical idea: that children are not vessels to be filled with information, but whole persons worthy of a rich, broad, and deeply human education.

We are part of the Ambleside Schools International (ASI) network — a global family of schools united by a shared educational philosophy and a commitment to the same vision: that education is not primarily about outcomes or results, but about the formation of the whole person. ASI schools share a common curriculum framework and teacher training, and we are grateful to belong to that community.

"Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life."
Charlotte M. Mason

By “atmosphere” Mason meant the living environment in which a child learns — the tone, the relationships, and the spirit of the home and school. By “discipline” she did not mean punishment or rigidity, but the formation of good habits: of attention, honesty, and perseverance. And by “life” she meant that education is not a preparation for living — it is living itself, encountered through real ideas, real books, and real relationships.

Durban North, Our Home

We are rooted in the Durban North community — a small school where every family is known by name, and where the relationships between teachers, children, and parents are genuine and lasting. We believe that education works best in community, and that the school-family partnership is not optional — it is essential.

Our campus is a place where children are given time — time for a nature walk, for a long read-aloud, for a conversation that goes somewhere unexpected. We guard that time carefully, because we believe it is in those unrushed moments that the deepest learning happens.

Two Schools, One Vision

We offer two programmes under one roof: Ambleside Preschool (Acorns) for children from Grade 000 to Grade R, and Ambleside Primary School for Grades 1 to 7. Both are shaped by the same philosophy, ensuring that a child's journey from their earliest years right through to Grade 7 is cohesive, warm, and deeply intentional.
